A
Letter from President Young
Theological study has been on the decline in America and
around the world since the early part of the nineteenth century.
At the same time, an equal rejection of the work of the
Holy Spirit, who is extending the Kingdom of God through the
people of God, has also occurred.
We believe today that there is a deep need for a proper
understanding of the balance between the Word and the Spirit.
CTS was established to awaken the Church to the message of
historical Christianity with a proper understanding of the Kingdom
of God that is demonstrated by the manifest presence of the Holy
Spirit. This is
the core value of Covenant Theological Seminary.
In this postmodern environment, a“feel good”
mentality has replaced historical Evangelicalism. A great shift from the world-view in which God is sovereignly
enthroned in glory over His creation has been replaced by a
man-centered philosophy. It
is not uncommon today to hear expositions of the belief that God
exists for the pleasure of man – even from modern pulpits.
This man-centered view has turned the message of the Bible
on its head and wrongly teaches that God exists for the benefit
and at the disposal of man.
In order to confront and address this great aberration, we
believe that God is raising up lights or standard bearers of His
classical objective truth. At
Covenant Theological Seminary we feel an intense call to defend
this standard ourselves and to train called persons to preach the
classical doctrines of the Word of God without fear and in
boldness. The epistle
of Jude instructs the Church to engage in proper apologetics that
proclaim and defend the faith.
“Beloved,
while eagerly preparing to write to you about the salvation we
share,
I
find it necessary to write and appeal to you to contend for the
faith
that
was once for all entrusted to the saints”
(Jude 1:3, NRSV).
I am very excited about the vision God has given Covenant
Theological Seminary. Utilizing
state-of-the-art educational concepts, we address the unique needs
of individuals and churches as they pursue sound biblical
teaching. I welcome
you to the task to “Do your best to present yourself to God
as one approved by Him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed,
rightly explaining the word of truth” (2
Timothy 2:15, NIV).
Your
servant in Christ,
President
W.A. Young, Jr., Th.D.
